What’s your carrot?

by Chris Gratigny on August 31st, 2009

the CarrotWhat motivates you?  Do you know?  If you don’t know how to motivate yourself, then how will others?

When my wife and I go to the store, we have to do her stuff first and my stuff last.  Once I get the things that I need, I’m done.  For me, I’m not usually motivated to do things for other people.  I have to find something that excites me in order to have energy.  I have to know what my carrot is.

I also like challenges, so I am motivated by a challenge.  I struggle to do dishes, to do anything that is a daily task.  Eating breakfast is difficult for me, it is a daily task.  Because I know what my carrot is, I have to challenge myself in order to eat breakfast.  I have to setup some sort of competition for myself, a challenge.

If you are motivated by people,  try accountability.  If you have a difficult time completing tasks, find someone who is task oriented and ask to be accountable to them.  Ask that person to check in with you to make sure that you complete your tasks.  Maybe you need a well done from your boss when you complete tasks.  What is your carrot?

When I know what my carrot is, I know how to motivate myself.  It is very important to be able to motivate yourself when no one else is around.  Set your carrot, and work for it.

When you know what you are motivated by, you can tell others how to motivate you, how to ask you to complete things.  Instead of making excuses to people when you aren’t able to perform tasks, you are able to clearly communicate how you are motivated in order to complete tasks.

I didn’t know you had a blog site. I understand you & daily tasks. Is that why you only liked to clean your room when it was out of control?

    Great blog Chris!
I had to giggle at your mom’s post and your reply.
I think you love competition, even when you are just competing with yourself.
