Your Happiness goes with You

There was once an old wise man sitting on his porch, and a younger man came to him and said “I’m thinking of moving here, what is it like?”

The wise man asked, “What is your old town like?”

The young man replied, “The people were lazy, they drank all of the time, and there was nothing to do.”

The wise man then said, “It’s the same here.”

Happiness, as we say here at Bethel, is an inside job.  If you are happy where you are, you’ll be happy when you move.  With the exception of abusive relationships, a change in your environment won’t do anything for your happiness.  If you are happy where you are, you will be happy where you go.

When I was in elementary school, I really disliked one of my teachers.  I complained to my parents about this individual. My parents said that I’d have people like this in my life, for the rest of my life.  Their solution? Learn how to deal with this person now.  This, like happiness, is something that is true for all of life.

If you are unhappy because of things that are going on, or other people – learn how to find happiness.  Deal with it.  If you go somewhere new, you’ll feel the same way.  New friends will treat you the same as your old friends.

The one thing that you, and only you can do for yourself, is to make decisions that make you happy.

You really didn’t like her too, complained ALL the time. I had the same thing too in 7th grade. It’s really hard to just learn how to deal, especially as a kid.
