When we first got our puppy, we went into PetSmart to get some supplies, and while we were there we ran into Chris, one of the trainers there. She said hi to Koda, and told us about the puppy training class that was starting the next Monday. We took the flyer and called the next day to book the puppy class.I have owned dogs before, but on a farm and we never took the dogs to training. They ran free most of the time, and would come most of the time when we could call them. Why train them?
Living in the city (Redding) it’s so much different. Puppy just hangs out in the back yard, or with us. He doesn’t get to run and meet the neighbor dogs, or get to run free over acres of property. To leave the house, we have to put him on a leash. This made training necessary.
Training was great for socializing Koda. I never thought of this until we went to training, but it was very important for him to be around other dogs. He does well with other dogs and loves to see them, and I think that this part of training was an important aspect for him.
Training was also great for training the human. In training, the dog doesn’t really have to do much. So much of it is the human needing to remember how to correct the pet, how to ask your pet to do what you’re asking.
Lastly, it is date night. Your pet likes to go out with you, to smell different things, see other people or dogs – whatever excites your pet. For Koda, he is always so excited to go out and drive around, or to go to the training.
Oh, it also helps the economy. If you do pet training, and you wonder why it is so reasonably priced…. it is because they know you’re going to buy toys or other things for your beloved pet. I tried to limit it to a very small toy each week.
If you really can’t get to dog training, then watch one of these shows – Cesar Milan or Victoria Stillwell.
