Choose What You Do

If you’ve ever stood in front of a room of people and trying to find volunteers, you’ll know how difficult it is to get people to volunteer.  Having been President in Toastmasters, and asking for volunteers for the next meeting – I’ve found people don’t volunteer very often.

When you are in any position to volunteer for something, be the first to put your hand up.  Don’t be the last person to volunteer.  If you are the last person to volunteer, you don’t get to choose what you are doing.  When you put your hand up first, you have more options.

Do you have things that are given to you that no one else wants?  You want to change this?  Volunteer for things before anyone else can do it.  I’m not suggesting that you push yourself in front of other people by any means!  You can do this without stepping on any toes.  You don’t need to draw attention to yourself either.

Simply say, “I’ll do it” when others hesitate. By volunteering, you’ll get to choose what you do rather than getting the leftovers. Don’t worry about better things coming along.  There will always be a next time.
