Communicate the Why

We all work with people, and we all make decisions. Have you ever worked with someone who made decisions and you never knew why? This can be incredibly frustrating, it is like you are being thrown around with no reason at all.If you don’t want to be doing the same thing you are doing 5 years from now, you need to tell people why you are doing things. When you make a decision, you can say “yes” or “no”. That works, you’re making a decision. In order to be able to reproduce yourself, to be able to allow others to know what you would do if you aren’t around – say why. “Yes, because of x and y”.

You may not realize how important it is to make yourself replaceable in what you are doing. This is one of the most important principles. If you never tell people why you do things, you won’t be replaceable. It means no vacation for you, no breaks, no time off, no promotion. Tell people why when you make decisions, and soon you have people who are empowered and can make decisions for you. And… you’ll even trust people! Imagine that.

I’ve done it both ways, and when I make decisions and people know why, I create a future for myself where I’m not mysteriously making decisions all by myself.
