Communication is about the Recipient

We work with people, and communicate with people daily.  Whether it is with our families or our co-workers.  And, no matter who we are communicating with, the person you are talking to should always be the focus. Lets take a child for instance, it's pretty easy to talk to a child differently than an adult, right?  You know that you need to communicate differently.  You figure out what they understand, and you talk that way.

My Last Name

I was born March 3, 1982 as Christopher Paul Gratny in Canton, Ohio.  My last name, as given, Gratny.  A fairly American sounding name.  While growing up, I heard rumors of a different last name. Something like D'Gratigny.  As a child, I was fascinated with this original name, and always wondered how it was spelled.

Sphinx - on Mac. Try #1

I've been trying to install Sphinx on on my Mac, and it is a challenge.  Actually, sphinx it is installed... but it isn't fully usable yet.  To get it going, I had to:

Install MacPorts.  Fairly easy.

Next, install the sphinx port.

I realized later that the instructions are the same on every page. This example isn't true for sphinx.

Sleep on it

You've heard it said before when making a decision.  The words, "I'll sleep on it.".  While I sometimes feel like it is an excuse, this has been something I've personally used more and more.  You have to remove yourself from the situation sometimes, and sleeping on it does just that.

Be excited for others

If you have ever told me anything exciting, you may have not received the best response. I probably questioned what you said, wasn't excited for you. I would assume I listened to what you said, then thought of a reason that it's not exciting. I suck at this... but I'm improving.

Starting May of this year, I'm been phasing out taking my laptop to meetings.  When I am at a meeting with no laptop, I'm able to pay full attention without having any distraction.  Even though I may be able to use the laptop when I'm in a meeting, it will rarely add to the effectiveness of the meeting, and what I take away from the meeting.

Know what metric(s) to watch

In John Maxwell's book The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork, he talks about the Law of the Scoreboard.   It's important to watch the scoreboard so you know how you are doing.  In a football game, you can look up to see the time as well as score of the game.  You know what to watch to see where you are in the game.

Can I sustain this?

A question I ask myself when I start something is.... can I sustain this?  Starting things is so much easier than finishing them, and at the beginning it's so much work to think critically about what you're doing.  This can apply to all areas of your life, but I'll focus on how this can affect your work.

Expect Little

It's 8:05, and you're waiting, drumming your fingers on the table.  Where are they?!?  You've been waiting for 10 minutes already, and they aren't there yet.  Granted, you were a few minutes early, but really - isn't everyone?  Don't they have the common sense to know that they should get there early as well?  Don't they value my time?  Why are they late!

Giving 100%

It's easy to try hard, to give 100% at what you're doing.  To be all that you can be, to live like there is no tomorrow.  Be careful if you do this, tomorrow might not be as pleasant as you would have hoped!
