What problem are you solving?

When a client initially contacts me for a solution, they are always going to come with a problem. They need a solution to their problem, and they often know exactly what they need.  Clients come "prepared". They found a widget that does exactly what they need, and they are sure that I need to make this widget work for them. Right?

You Just Know

As I mentioned a few posts ago, I want my next car to be a Lexus ES 300. While I'm shopping for the car, it just doesn't feel like it is the right timing. Don't get me wrong, I don't think there is a wrong time to own a Lexus.... but it just doesn't feel like it is the right timing for me to buy a car. My car is still running just fine, I don't need one - I just want one. My Honda Accord with 210K miles runs quite nicely, and is worth more to me than it would be to a buyer.

Turn Down Your Ambition

Ambition can be a wonderful thing, but it can be one of the most detrimental motivators in your life.  When you are motivated by ambition, you may be prone to walk all over other people.  Ambition isn't always bad though, it can motivate you to push forward.  To make good long term decisions in your life.  But, you have to be careful with your ambition.

Sleep on it

You've heard it said before when making a decision.  The words, "I'll sleep on it.".  While I sometimes feel like it is an excuse, this has been something I've personally used more and more.  You have to remove yourself from the situation sometimes, and sleeping on it does just that.

Know what metric(s) to watch

In John Maxwell's book The 17 Indisputable Laws of Teamwork, he talks about the Law of the Scoreboard.   It's important to watch the scoreboard so you know how you are doing.  In a football game, you can look up to see the time as well as score of the game.  You know what to watch to see where you are in the game.

Can I sustain this?

A question I ask myself when I start something is.... can I sustain this?  Starting things is so much easier than finishing them, and at the beginning it's so much work to think critically about what you're doing.  This can apply to all areas of your life, but I'll focus on how this can affect your work.
